FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Common questions asked before a consultation, about graduate study, JSPS PD / RPD fellowships, and research collaboration.

Graduate study

Q. Can I apply from another university?

Yes. However, contact before applying is required. Tell us your interests and your current situation via the contact form. We will discuss the direction of your topic and our capacity to supervise it in a meeting (online is fine) before you prepare an application.

Q. Is there anything I should read before applying?

There is no set reading list. After you contact us, we may suggest literature depending on your interests.

Q. Can I be supervised in English?

Yes. Supervision in English is available; please contact us before applying.

Q. Can I enter as a working professional?

We have not hosted working professionals so far, but acceptance is possible if a pre-application meeting confirms a good match between your topic and our supervision. Please start from the contact form.

Q. How often are the seminars?

There is a weekly graduate seminar (currently held jointly with labs in related areas of the department) and a weekly sub-seminar, where we read books and papers together and hold workshops on new methods.

Q. Are there core hours?

No. We do recommend coming to the lab at regular times and keeping a regular daily rhythm — and we strongly recommend getting enough sleep.

Q. Who pays for conference participation and publication?

When you present, conference fees and travel costs are subsidized by the lab. Support programs of the School of Humanities and the university are also available. Publication fees are covered by lab research funds as far as possible, so that the costs do not fall on you.

Q. What equipment is available?

For eye tracking we use an EyeLink 1000 (SR Research); a Tobii tracker is also available (shared with a neighboring lab). Experiment PCs and displays are well provided.

JSPS fellowships / collaboration

Q. Can I consult about JSPS PD / RPD fellowships?

Yes. Application documents take time to prepare, so contact us early in the application year.

Q. Where do I start for research collaboration?

Via the contact form: tell us your topic and the collaboration you have in mind.
